Tri-Rail for value. A direct car for fewer changes.

Take the free airport shuttle to Tri-Rail for the lowest practical rail fare. A taxi, ride app or suitable prebooked transfer is usually the simplest door-to-door choice, especially for Miami Beach.

Cheapest practical route

Free shuttle + Tri-Rail

As checked October 1, 2026, the adult weekday one-way fare to Miami Airport Station is $4.00; a weekend or holiday day pass is $5. For Miami Beach, add Route 150 and the final walk to your hotel.

Fastest & easiest to the door

Taxi or ride app

A direct vehicle avoids the station shuttle and local transit changes. Compare a current fare or quote for the full hotel address, with enough room for every passenger and suitcase.

Comfortable Downtown option

Brightline + connector

Brightline reaches MiamiCentral. Its airport connector currently costs $15 per guest, including the fuel surcharge, before the variable train fare and any onward ride.

Tri-Rail fares rechecked October 1, 2026.

The rail and combined-fare examples in this guide were rechecked on October 1, 2026 and reflect the current fares. Use Tri-Rail’s current fare calculator before buying. The airport shuttle remains a separate, complimentary connection.

What we would choose

For a budget trip with manageable bags, we would start with Tri-Rail and plan the last connection before leaving FLL. For Miami Beach after a long flight, a late arrival or a group with several cases, we would compare the complete vehicle price with the saving from public transport.

Miami and Miami Beach are different destinations. Brightline can suit a Downtown stay, but neither it nor Tri-Rail goes directly to the beach. The best choice depends on the hotel address, not just the word “Miami.”

Compare every leg, not just the train fare.

Tri-Rail and combined-fare examples rechecked October 1, 2026. Other price guidance was checked September 24, 2026. Check current fares before buying. Planning ranges include shuttle connections, waiting and onward travel where stated. They are estimates, not guarantees; allow extra time for immigration and baggage collection.

Start with the free airport shuttle.

Tri-Rail’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach is off airport property. It is a different station from Brightline Fort Lauderdale and from Tri-Rail’s separate Fort Lauderdale city station.

From the terminal to a southbound train

  1. Collect your bags and follow Tri-Rail/public-transport signs on the arrivals level.
  2. Use the complimentary airport shuttle to the Fort Lauderdale Airport station at Dania Beach. Confirm the current curbside stop with signs or airport staff.
  3. Buy the correct ticket before boarding the train.
  4. Board a southbound Tri-Rail service and check the destination and any required change.
  5. For Miami Beach, continue to Miami Airport Station. For Downtown or Brickell, use the exact connection shown in the planner.

Follow the current Tri-Rail shuttle signs on the lower arrivals level and ask airport staff for the active pickup point. Construction can change curbside stops. The free shuttle generally runs every 15–20 minutes during train operating hours.

Tri-Rail recommends reaching the station 20 minutes before departure. Train time alone is not enough for planning an airport connection, and trains do not wait for late shuttle passengers.

Buy your fare before boarding.

Fort Lauderdale Airport to Miami Airport is a two-zone journey. As checked October 1, 2026, an adult weekday one-way ticket is $4.00 and the $5 weekend/holiday pass provides unlimited Tri-Rail rides for that day. Calculate the fare for your travel date before buying.

Station ticket machines accept cash, debit and credit cards. Do not depend on the staffed kiosk being open, particularly at weekends or on holidays.

Compare a separate ticket with an eligible EASY Card fare only after checking the transfer rules. A paper ticket or an unrelated bank-card payment does not automatically carry the discounted onward transfer.

Downtown, Brickell and the Beach need different plans.

Check the property’s full address before buying. Miami Airport Station and MiamiCentral are different arrival points, and neither is a station on Miami Beach.

  • Miami BeachTake Tri-Rail to Miami Airport Station, then Route 150 from the ground-level Metrobus bays on the west side of the same intermodal complex.
  • Downtown MiamiCompare the Tri-Rail MiamiCentral itinerary with Brightline to MiamiCentral. Check whether your Tri-Rail departure requires a change at Metrorail Transfer Station.
  • Brickell and other Metrorail destinationsCompare a change from Tri-Rail at Metrorail Transfer Station with the onward route from MiamiCentral. Let the exact hotel address guide the choice.

Do not take the MIA Mover to the airline terminal before Route 150. The bus boards at Miami Airport Station, where your Tri-Rail journey ends. Follow signs to the bus bays.

Continuing to Miami Beach

Using the fares rechecked October 1, 2026, separate tickets total $6.25 on a weekday or $7.25 at weekends and holidays: Tri-Rail plus the regular $2.25 Route 150 fare. Check current fares before buying.

Miami-Dade lists a 60-cent adult Metrobus transfer for eligible Tri-Rail riders using an EASY Card or EASY Ticket with cash value. Its guidance requires at least $2 in cash value. A Tri-Rail pass alone does not pay the onward bus fare; paper Tri-Rail tickets require the full Miami-Dade fare.

Route 150 generally runs about every 30 minutes via the 41st Street area, Collins Avenue, Lincoln Road and Washington Avenue. Choose the stop nearest the hotel and check the final walk. Our Miami Airport to Miami Beach guide explains the bus and payment details.

Continuing to Downtown or Brickell

Tri-Rail serves MiamiCentral, but most MiamiCentral journeys require a connecting train at Metrorail Transfer Station. Only the specified express services run through; check your particular train and direction.

If the planner uses Metrorail for the onward journey, its standard fare is $2.25 when bought separately. Miami-Dade lists a $1.20 adult Metrorail transfer for eligible Tri-Rail riders using an EASY Card or EASY Ticket with the required cash value.

For wider local connections, see Getting around cities. Keep the chosen ticket or card available for each stage, and check the last useful connection to your hotel.

A comfortable Downtown option, with an airport connection.

Brightline departs from its Fort Lauderdale city station and arrives at MiamiCentral. Its train station is not inside FLL, and the service does not continue to Miami Beach.

Include the connector in the budget.

Brightline advertises its FLL airport connector daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with airport pickups roughly twice per hour. It costs $12 plus a $3 fuel surcharge per guest, in addition to the train fare.

A same-day Brightline ticket is required. Connector seats are first come, first served, and guests can pay when boarding at the airport. Allow time for the shuttle and station process before selecting a train.

Train fares are dynamic. Check the actual price for your departure, then add any final Miami or Miami Beach taxi, ride app or transit fare. A direct vehicle may compare favorably for a group once every person’s connector charge is included.

Confirm the boarding point for your terminal.

Brightline and airport pages contain conflicting pickup-zone details, and construction can move the stop. Check Brightline’s current connector instructions and confirm with airport ground-transport staff. Follow the signed arrivals-level pickup arrangements for this service.

Keep the airport connector distinct from Tri-Rail’s free shuttle. They serve different Fort Lauderdale stations and have different prices and operating hours.

Choose a direct ride when the changes are not worth it.

A car is usually the simplest option for Miami Beach, a late arrival, several large bags or a group sharing the fare. Travel time depends on the pickup, exact destination and road conditions.

Taxi or ride app from FLL

Use the official taxi dispatch area on the lower, arrivals level, or the pickup point assigned by your ride app. Current ride-app areas include the Terminal 1 Zone Z arrangement and the southern Palm Garage for Terminals 3 and 4. For Terminal 2, follow current Ride Sharing signs and the app’s instructions.

A taxi is metered or variable; a ride app gives a current quote. Airport estimate tables are not fixed-price guarantees. Compare the total for the exact address after collecting all bags, particularly when demand is high.

Confirm that the vehicle can carry everyone and all the cases. A standard car that seats the group may still lack enough luggage space.

Prebooked private transfer

A suitable prebooked vehicle can simplify a family arrival, a wheelchair-accessible journey or a group traveling with several cases. Give the provider the complete hotel address, not just “Miami.”

  • Confirm passenger seats and luggage capacity for the whole party.
  • Request and confirm a suitable child seat, accessible vehicle or other equipment.
  • Check the meeting point and what happens if the flight is delayed.
  • Read the total-price, waiting-time and cancellation terms before booking.

Do not assume a regular airport taxi supplies the right child seat or that every waiting vehicle can accommodate a non-folding wheelchair.

Make sure the whole route works with your bags.

Count the shuttle, station movement and final connection as part of the journey. The lowest fare is less useful if the luggage or accessibility requirements make those changes difficult.

Tri-Rail and the beach connection

Tri-Rail passengers handle their own luggage. Keep aisles, doors and accessible areas clear, and bring only what you can safely move through the shuttle and station connection.

The airport station has elevators. If you need a lift-equipped shuttle or boarding assistance, confirm the complete accessible connection with FLL or Tri-Rail before traveling.

For Miami Beach, include the Route 150 boarding point and final walk in that plan. The bus can be practical with normal airline luggage, but a direct accessible vehicle may be simpler for a party with substantial equipment or several cases.

Brightline baggage and boarding

Brightline permits two carry-ons and one personal item per guest. Each carry-on must be no more than 50 lb and 24 × 16 × 10 inches. Check the current policy for your fare and journey before bringing larger bags.

Larger bags must be presented to Guest Services and may incur fees. Add them when booking and check them in with Guest Services at least 30 minutes before departure; baggage space is not guaranteed. Staff may ask you to carry tagged bags aboard on the Fort Lauderdale–Miami route.

Brightline trains and stations offer accessible boarding and toilets; add your wheelchair travel requirements when booking. Confirm an accessible airport-to-station vehicle separately before booking, along with the final connection from MiamiCentral.

Check the last useful connection, not just the last train.

The airport shuttle, train and onward bus have separate operating windows. A late train into Miami is only useful if it still leaves a practical route to your hotel.

Before leaving the terminal

  1. Check the live southbound Tri-Rail departure and allow for the airport shuttle and station arrival time.
  2. For Miami Beach, check whether the train reaches Miami Airport Station with enough time to walk to Route 150.
  3. For Brightline, check the airport connector window separately from the train schedule.
  4. If the public-transport chain no longer works, compare the official taxi line, a ride-app quote or a confirmed private transfer.

Leave room between services.

The regular published southbound Tri-Rail window at Fort Lauderdale Airport is approximately 5:02 a.m.–10:07 p.m. on weekdays and 6:33 a.m.–9:33 p.m. at weekends and holidays. Check your exact date and any alerts before relying on those times.

Brightline advertises its airport connector until 7 p.m. A later train does not imply a later airport shuttle. For Miami Beach, a tight connection to the last Route 150 bus is a poor backup plan. Allow for walking and delays.

If the final practical service has gone, arrange a direct ride or a confirmed overnight stay. Do not travel to an off-airport station expecting an overnight train.

Ten assumptions to avoid.

Choose the correct station, total fare and final destination before booking the journey.

  1. Assuming Brightline trains depart inside FLL.
  2. Confusing Brightline Fort Lauderdale, Tri-Rail Fort Lauderdale and Tri-Rail’s Fort Lauderdale Airport station.
  3. Treating Miami and Miami Beach as the same destination.
  4. Expecting a regional train to reach a Miami Beach hotel directly.
  5. Taking the MIA Mover to the airline terminal before boarding Route 150.
  6. Planning around train departure time without allowing for the airport shuttle and station walk.
  7. Forgetting Brightline’s per-person airport connector charge before the train fare.
  8. Assuming every Tri-Rail service runs through to MiamiCentral without a change.
  9. Bringing oversized Brightline luggage without checking handling rules, fees and deadlines.
  10. Treating a published taxi estimate as a current fixed-price quote.

A few final answers.

Use the official operator links below to check the fare, timetable, airport pickup and luggage rules for your actual journey.

Take Tri-Rail to Miami Airport Station and change directly to Route 150. Using fares rechecked October 1, 2026, separate tickets total $6.25 on weekdays or $7.25 at weekends and holidays. Check current fares before buying. Eligible EASY Card or EASY Ticket users with cash value may qualify for a lower onward transfer fare.

Does Brightline pick up at FLL?

Brightline advertises a paid airport connector to its Fort Lauderdale station from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, roughly every 30 minutes. It costs $12 plus a $3 fuel surcharge per guest and requires a same-day train ticket. Confirm the current pickup point before traveling.

Is Brightline or Tri-Rail better from FLL?

Tri-Rail has the lower advertised rail fare and a free airport shuttle. Brightline offers a comfortable journey to MiamiCentral, with a paid airport connector and variable train fare. Compare the complete price and connection for your hotel; neither train reaches Miami Beach.

Can I take one Tri-Rail train straight to Downtown Miami?

Only specified express services run through to MiamiCentral. Most journeys require a connecting train at Metrorail Transfer Station. Check the particular train, direction and current timetable rather than assuming a one-seat ride.

What should I use late at night?

After the last practical rail or connector option, use an official taxi, a ride app or a prebooked transfer. For Miami Beach, check the final Route 150 connection before leaving FLL rather than relying on the train’s operating hours alone.
